Life Hack for Getting Suddenly Awesome: Don’t Worry and Don’t Make Babies

It’s one of the most natural things in the world, and one of the least necessary:

Two weeks ago, I wrote a post describing how our brain fools us into being unhappy (read that post here). In it, I cited the book Happiness: The Science Behind Your Smile by author and psychologist Daniel Nettle. Well, as it turns out, the book contained another little gem that I just had to share.

Here’s it is:

“… Natural selection doesn’t give a fig for our happiness. It just wants us alive and making babies.”

In other words: Your brain is not always right.

Just because it’s natural to do something (like worry incessantly over nothing), that doesn’t mean it’s the best thing for us to be doing.

So my “get happy” tip for the day: Don’t do everything your brain tells you to.

Don’t worry so darn much, and, while you’re at it, stop making babies.

Okay, so I’m not exactly following the latter part of that piece of advice. But still.

I just thought I’d throw it out there.

Fights You’ll Have After Having a Baby: A Self-Help Novel

  1. Huge difference between making babies because you are happy and can’t wait to share joy with more family members and making babies because you are sad or just because you think you have to.
You don’t have to make babies. The world will be just fine if you say no to that for awhile, at least.
