Dear kids,

I already told you how much I love reading nonfiction. But other than children’s books and Agatha Christie mysteries, classic novels were my first written-down loves.

In fact, for nearly ten years, I read classic fiction almost exclusively. I tracked my reading in dated lists and carefully refined my collection. What follows is a result of those efforts: a list of the finest fiction classics I’ve encountered. All of these books are culturally and historically important, and the majority are also a lot of fun to read.

Two caveats: One, my focus in these lists is clearly on English-language literature. Two, I have not read all of the books in the Younger Readers sections—yet. This is the classics reading list I plan to use with you guys when you’re older and we’re doing the homeschooling thing.

I very much look forward to it.

I’ve placed asterisks next to the books I personally love the most. But hey—feel free to read everything on this list. I won’t stop you. Also, don’t hesitate to rely on summaries and notes for anything you don’t particularly like. Some of the books, while culturally important, are pretty boring.

By the way, in order to better facilitate contextual understanding, I have listed the works in chronological order. I know, I know: Best mom ever.

Much love,

Mom
